On the way back to his hotel, Karl’s CIA phone started to buzz inside his backpack. Because he didn’t trust the former FSB officer, he pulled over just before crossing the Palace Bridge, which would bring him back toward the main downtown of St. Petersburg. Then he found a parking lot and left his car as he wandered down a stone walkway toward a point that overlooked the Neva River, along with the Peter and Paul Fortress to the north and the Hermitage Museum across the river to the south.

Once he got to the far end of the half-moon walkway, he finally pulled out his Agency phone and glanced at the call history. The phone was set to erase any call after ten minutes. This call made no sense. Roddy normally called from a single number that Karl had memorized. And only a couple of people had this secure number. He hit redial and the phone hesitated as the encryption went through.

Finally, a gruff voice answered, “Is this any way to treat your old man?”

Yeah, his father had his number. So did his girlfriend, former CIA officer Sirena. This must have been her phone.

“What happened to your phone?” Karl asked.

“I had to destroy it. Never mind. I’ll get a new one. Have you heard?”

“About the new director?”

“You have heard,” Jake Adams said.

“My boss thought I should know.”

“I’ll go and brief her in person,” Jake said.

“I thought the current director would do so.”

“I told him not to,” Jake said. “I told him to forget he ever heard of you. He’ll take your secret to his grave.”

Karl wasn’t sure if his father had threatened the soon to be former CIA Director, but he wouldn’t put it past his dad to do this.

“Thanks,” Karl said.

“No problem. Now, what are you doing in St. Petersburg?”

Karl almost forgot that his father could track him based on this phone, which had been inactive for quite some time. “I just reactivated my phone. How did you know?”

“I get a notice when it’s turned on.”

“I figured that much,” Karl said. “Would you like to tell me where you moved?”

“For now, we’re in Montenegro,” Jake said. “Far enough away from Kotor to not be annoyed by cruise ship tourists.”

“Never been there.”

“I’m guessing your current company gives you vacation once in a while. I’d like to meet your girlfriend.”

“I’m not sure that’s possible,” Karl said. And then he thought about what he’d just said. Could he ever marry Olga? If so, he’d have to keep the lie going forever. How else could he explain his father? Jake Adams was a known entity from the old KGB to the GRU and now the SVR and FSB. “At least not yet.”

“Then come alone.” His father sounded disturbed now.

“I can’t help my current situation,” Karl reasoned.

“I told you not to get too attached to anyone. That was lesson number one.”

“I know. But some things can’t be helped.”

Silence on the other end for a full minute, as Karl kept turning around to see if anyone was coming or could possibly overhear his conversation.
